NOXIOUS WEEDS.
LESS IN HAWERA COUNTY. The perennial problem of dealing with noxious weeds was brought up by Or. Washer at Saturday’s meeting of the County Council, when he remarked on the position in his riding. He said that although there was a lot on the Sheet Road near the railway line, he considered the position generally was not 1 so bad as last year.
Cr. Williams said there were large areas out at Ohangai and Meremere, but they were not nearly so bad. as previously. Indeed, he said, he considered it was being checked, and there was less than he had seen for a long time. In places where weeds showed profuse growth last year, the grass was coming through and the weeds going out. It was a good year to keen in check jand reduce the pest. He thought the position might be due to tlie presence in very large numbers of a caterpillar which- stripped the leaves. 1
The chairman said that all. through the King Country there was an abatement of the nuisance, and that in places where last year the weed was in full bloom there was very much less this year.
Councillors generally were pleased to note the improvement, and urged special efforts to further check the pest.
