LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Reference was made at Saturday’s meeting of the Hawera County Council to the amount (£300) put on the Government Estimates for the Ohawe and Makawa Roads and .subsequently withdrawn. Tire chairman '.said it had been rumoured that the amount was deleted at the instigation of the council. He would like to explain that, as was evidenced by a letter reeeived from the Secretary to the Treasury, the amount was cut out because it had been considered not urgent. and that the amount scheduled for Hawera County had been exceeded. The allocations were made annually for works considered to be most needed. A christening service, a ceremony quite unique in the annals of the sparsely populated district of Whareorino (to the north of Awakino) took place on Sunday, January 11, on the banks of the * beautiful Waikawau river (says the Taranaki Herald). This was the first time within the memory of the present inhabitants that an Anglican clergyman had been in the district, and it was suggested by some of the residents that the Rev. H. Coleman, who was there on holiday leave, should hold a service. He agreed to conduct a baptismal service. As there was not a church within, a distance of 50 miles, it was decided to hold the service on the beach at the mouth of the Waikawau river. In the course of the £Tapier wool sale last week, one of the auctioneers submitted the clip of Brownlie Brothers, Pulcetitiri, aud before submitting it remarked humorously that this wool, from the flock of the famous All Blacks, deserved a specially good price. There was much laughter from the buyers ’ benches, and one buyer retored: “Oh, Jimmy Mill is my favourite. ’ ’ Whether or not, however, the Rugby achievements of the Brownlies influenced the buyers, the fact remains that their wool brought a very satisfactory price.
