WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP'S. FINE DOUBLES PLAY. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. PALMERSTON N., Jan. 16. At the tennis championship the following finals were played:— -Men’s Doubles —Andrews’ (Palmerston North) and Lowry (Hawke’s Bay) beat Smyth (Wellington) and Fotheringham (Auckland). 6 — 2, 6 —3. Ladies’ Doubles. —Misses Lloyd (New South Wales) and Macfarlane (Auckland) beat Misses Clegg and East (Wellington), 6 —o, 6—3. The outstanding feature in the most sensational, event in the tournament, the defeat of the New Zealand men’s championship doubles combination, Smvtli and Fotheringham. by Andrews and Lowry, was the brilliance of Lowisy. Whatever may- be said about him in the singles play, he was a revelation in the final doubles championship this morning. His fast service, terrific smashes, from the net and midcourt, his wonderful accuracy in picking up half and full volleying at tho net aroused frequent enthusiastic applause. Andrews ably seconded h>s partner in service, hard drives from the rear out of the court, as well as playing. Ho was a powerful unit in a great combination.
