NOTES AND 'COMMENTS. 03 Maecenas') Merit is moving very freely at Trentham, and the imported mare will have plenty of admirers ior her "Wellington engagements. With the "Wellington and I*oxton meetings to engage their attention next week snortsmen w.ill have ample scope to test"their “tipping power.” At the time of wilting no visiting horses have arrived at r l re nth am ioi the "Wellington • .Racing Club’s meeting, hut the next few days may show a different state of affairs. If stripped at her best. Limelight must he given a great chance in the Wellington Cun, for the little southerner is a good stayer and will Ire admirably suited by the Trenthain course. lip till now the English-bred Grand Knight has not shown even moderate public form in the Dominion, and has not reached his English form bv many removes, hut he is now galloping well at Trentham, and on 'Tuesday morning ran, four furlongs in 4s)sec. Gyrene, who heat a good held in the Welcome Stakes at the Canterbury spring meeting, will he a runner for the Wellington Stakes, and as Gyrene has not started since his Canterbury success it remains to he seen if he is on the up-grade. Although Royal Divorce quickly cot over the mishap which caused his withdrawal from the second, third, and fourth day of the Auckland meeting, it has been decided not to race him at the forthcoming Wellington meeting. When trained by his owner last season "Master Sandstone gave indications of developing into a middle distance performer, but for some reason Master Sandstone lias been kept to short distance- racing since joining H. Telford’s stable. In this department of racing Master Sandstone has met with fair success, but may not be quite brilliant enough for such a class as one usually finds in a race such as the Telegraph Handicao to be decided ai. the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting. The scratching of Suggestion for the Wellington Cup will cause surprise in

many quarters, as many keen followers of the- sport fancied Suggestion for that.event. Personally, I did not give tiie Wairnrapa-owned gelding much chance, as up to the present even a ten-furlong race js further than he cares to go, when the company is of tlie class he would encounter in the Wellington Cup. Possibly a mile is Suggestion’s favourite distance, and he is much above the average over that course. WELLINGTON TROTS. FINAL DAY’S RESULTS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 14.
