AT THE BEACH

WORKING BEE AT OHAWE. • 1 ■ \ SPLENDID WORK DONE. In connection with the movement to generally improve the access to the Uhawe beach, a band of nearly 20 willing workers, including professional, business men and visitors residing at the beach, spent yesterday as a working bee. Mr Muggeridge, the county engineer, made an olfer to Mr N. Caplen, chairman of the Seaside Improvement Committee, to provide a lorry and driver provided the committee supplied the ivorkers. The response for voluntary labour was most hearty, and by 8.30 a.m. the working bee was on the spot ready to commence work. Unaccustomed muscles were exercised in great style, and the sweat poured from scholastic and lawyer-like foreheads, whilst business men of aldermanic dimensions toiled manfully. A special 1 word of praise is due to those of the party who took part in the arduous work of loading the lorry. The whole of the new road with the exception of about two chains was completed. The centre of the road was covered with gravel, and the. amount of work done will lie greatly appreciated by residents and visitors alike, as they will now be able to go up and down to the beach in all kinds of weather. During the day the toilers were regaled with light refreshments by the ladies residing at the beach, whose efforts in this direction were much appreciated. Whenever opportunity is given for subscribing to funds for beach improvements visitors to the beach should certainly demonstrate in a practical way their appreciation of the splendid efforts of the committee to make the resort as ‘attractive as possible, as the beach is rightly regarded , as the lungs of the town and district.

It is understood that a deputation from the residents at the beach will Wait on the Hawera County Council at its next meeting, when they will present a requisition asking the County Council to raise a loan to make a good road right to the beach.
