INQUIRY IN SYDNEY. GOVERNMENT HELP REFUSED. LORD MAYOR’S ATTITUDE. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Jan. 14, 11.15 a.in. SYDNEY, Jan. 14. Lord Mayor Stokes, replying to a. communication from Chief Secretary Oakes that steps should be taken by Labour aldermen regarding the position of Alderman Burke, in view of the evidence given at the civic inquiry, says: “The present Government saw fit, ;just prior to last municipal elections, to appoint a commissioner to make inquiries into certain phases of civic life. That commissioner has reported', and surely with the advice at his disposal the Government has sufficient courage to give the persons implicated an opportunity of receiving justice in our courts, or failing that, to admit that the facts adduced do not call for any action. Until/some action has been taken by the Government along these lines, it would appear that any further comment by me would, under the circumstances, be gratuitous and prejudicial to the true course of justice. For this reason, also, lam not. submitting the matter to the council. ’’
