De Garis, charged with extensive defalcations in Australia, was a passenger by the Maheno, which arrived at 1.1.30 this morning a.nd anchored in the stream, where he was arrested by detectives and brought ashore. At 1 p.m. a great crowd awaited the berthing of the steamer, hoping to view the prisoner, but they were disappointed. as the police boat had landed at a quiet spot on the foreshore. De Garis could not be found the first dav out from Sydney. but the next day a third-class passenger came under suspicion. Search of his belongings disclosed pyjamas marked De Garis. The man was then kept under strict observation. When detectives appeard on the scene the pyjamas had disappeared. De Garis presents a subdued demeanour.
