SECRETARY HUGHES RESIGNS
20 YEARS OF PUBLIC LIFE 1 . BY CABLE—PEES 3 ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. WASHINGTON, Jan .-10. Mr. C. E. Hughes lias resigned his position as Secretary of State for the United States of America. Mr. Hughes will be succeeded by Mr. Frank Kellog, now Ambassador to Great Britain. The resignation of Mr. Hughes takes effect on March 4, when lie completes four years as head of the State Department. It is said that Mr. Hughes desires after twenty years’ public life to return to private life. In his letter of resignation he expressed to the President liis deep appreciation ' “of the confidence reposed in me and the privilege of serving under your leadership.” President Coolidge replied with an expression of reget and renewed confidence in the Secretary. The resignation caused surprise in the capitol. It is understood that for months Mr. Hughes desired again to engage in law practice, but his friends thought lie would remain in the Cabnet another .year. President Coolidge and Mr. Hughes always appeared to see eye to eye on foreign affairs, but for some time Mr, Hughes’ opponents in the Senate, which lias advisory power l in affairs, have been a source of apparently growing irritation to him. He never agreed with Senator Borah on some vital questions of foreign policy.
