SWIMMING

(By “Silent Watcher.”)

During this last few days summer has begun to make, swimmers feel like taking to the water. Before Christmas one felt better in full clothes than in his bathing suit.

Many visitors from different places, including Blenheim, Gisborne, Hamilton, Dunedin and other places, have found their way to the baths, and have enjoyed themselves exceedingly.

Mr P. G. Bamford, who spends his annual furlough in Hawera, put 6 in many hours at the baths, and is also an enthusiastic worker at Ohawe.

The long-looked-for carnival is to take place on Tuesday • evening next. It takes a carnival to liven up the swimmers. The fact of the addition to the list of W. Claringbold and F. Champion will be a feature in helping to make the carnivals attractive. Excellent competition is expected.

Seven big swimming events in one month (January), is a record for Wellington, and should do much towards popularising the sport. The different clubs have drawn up excellent programmes, and all classes of swimmers are being so well catered for, that there should be record entries. These events should .also materially assist the selectors in choosing the Wellington representatives for the forthcoming national championships, which -arc to he held in Christchurch.

The following judges have been elected by the Royal Life-Saving Society for the ensuing year: Messrs I. Duffy, Ralph Smith, W. Gearie. D Gallagher G. Spriggins, W. Ashbridge, M Russell. Jenkins and J. Williams. The following time-keepers were also elected: Messrs. Decker, McNio. Gearie, Watts and Turner.

A copy of the circular sent to tho Canterbury Head Centre by the Canterbury swimming bodies has been rereived by the local centre, in reference ho the conclusion of live-savino- events on swimming programmes. The suggestion is a very important one, as the need for a more general knowledge of life-saving is becoming more pronounced every day. Apart from that, it would bring about a'spirit of co-operation between swimming land '' fe- *avinrr bodies that would react to tte l>enefit of both and at tb« same time crea+e added interest on the part of the public.
