Thus an English exchange: The oldtime notion that actors were all “rogues and vagabonds’’ has been quite eclipsed by a recent example of official prejudice in Melbourne. In a statement cabled from there about the migrants on the Largs Bay it was alleged that one of the girls actually had a bag of golf clubs. The “alleged”, is very quaint, but the note in The Times on the subject adds perfection to the quaintness by the naive remark. The Australian High Commissioner (Sir Joseph Cook) (says The Times) has received an official cablegram from Melbourne which states that the allegation is without foundation, and that the migrants are an excellent average lot. Obviously the lady couldn’t have had a bag of golf sticks after all.”
