TEST CRICKET.

WILL ENGLAND WIN THE TOSS?

PROSPECTS FOR NEXT TEST

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, (Received Jan. 9, 11.40 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 8. “Beaten, but not downhearted,” sums up the evening papers’ comment on the result of the test at Melbourne. of which the reports engrossed public attention to the exclusion of everything else throughout the match. The 'papers emphasise that Australia’s initial innings practically decided the issue, as it is impossible for any batsmen to score the runs necessary for victory on a worn wicket. Sutcliffe, Hobbs and Tate are singled out as great figures in the contest, and the hope is expressed that Gilligan will win the toss in the next venture, as the British team has shown the capacity to win tests.

Statistics. —The match was in its seventh day. In all 1619 runs were scored, against 1611 in the first test. Five centuries were scored, three by Englishmen and two by Australians. Following are the century makers: Sutcliffe (E) 176 Hobbs (E) 154 V. Richardson (A) 13S Pons ford (A) 128 Sutcliffe (E) 127
