' Newton gave evidence that the greatest influence which led him to come to England to give evidence was because of Hobbs accusing him of forgery at a time when they were supposed to be friends. Cross-examined, Newton said the arrested aide-de-camp (Captain Charles Arthur) bought his share of the proceeds of the second cheque for 600.000 francs. He spent the £40.000 which he had received, also the 600,000 francs.
