IN WOMAN’S GARB
ENGINEER’S .PRANK
CAUSES STIR IN CITY
SYDNEY, Dec. 24. A marine engineer with a penchant for wearing woman’s dress —or the garb of a Bedouin, as lie says —in the city has caused some excitement and no,t a little amusement in Sydney during the last month. On the first occasion he was found scampering round Eddy Avenue, near the Central Railway Station, when all the business people were coming into the city in the morning. He was arrested," and on that occasion was sentenced to a fortnight in gaol. Last Saturday lie caused another scare in Elizabeth Street, when he paraded up and down in the same dress. When questioned by a constable he stated that lie was dressed ior diving, and lie told the policeman to mind Ins own business. On Monday the same man found himself before the .court again. * "l was previously arrested for wearing tliis dress,” he said, “and only came oiit of Long Bay Gaol oil Saturday. I had the dress with me, and when in a wine bar found that my trousers were torn. I put the dress on until I could gee a needle and cotton to mend the tear.” In reply to a question by the Police Prosecutor, he stated that it was "not a woman’s dress, but that of a Bedouin, and he had, had it since 1916, when he was serving in the desert. He added that ho had been shot in the headland djrink had affected him strangely. The Magistrate pointed out that wearing the dress, whatever it was, was offensive to people, and defendant promised not to wear :it again il lie was discharged. \ Accordingly he was released with a warning. The same typo of thing has been rather prevalent this year, ancf some amusing instances have come under the notice of the police. Following several complaints from Rushcutter’s Bay, they followed one supposed woman, who was walking with another female. Spoken to, No. 1 of the party confessed that he had a jealous wife, and when he wanted to take a stroll with, another woman he always dressed in woman’s clothes.
