SOCOER.
The Soccer cult has grown very much in the Dominion, and now has a pretty good hold on Taranaki, especially in the south, where, with headquarters at Hawera, a series of district matches are played each season. The manage-, ihent committee are energetic and enthusiastic, and are doing a good work for a fine game. In England it is Soccer that draws the huge crowds, and in many parts it quite overshadows Rugby. Evidently in the early days in New Zealand Soccer was popular, brought here by the jpen of English regiments stationed in various parts. In his recollections given to the Star, Mr W. Wallace recalled that in Wellington in his young days Soccer was the only football played. In those far-off days the men arranged matches, and they played on Te Aro Flat, a great swamp reclaimed.
