STRATFORD RACES. CONCLUDED Y ESTERDAY. AIVBEY BELL AVI.NS BIG RACE. POUMA THE FLYING. Beautiful weather yesterday favoured the concluding day of the Stratford races.'and consequently there was again an exceptionally large attendance of patrons. Investments were, freely made, hut owing to there being only three starters in the • Ngaere Handicap the grand total was affected to the extent of £2300, the' decrease on this particular race when compared with the same race last year. However, at the end of the clay it was found that the investments were only £1730 10s below those of last year, which with the small drop on the previous day made the total decrease for the meeting £1904 10s. The investments for the day amounted to £26,583 10s, as coinpared with £28,114 last year, while the total for the meeting amounted to £60.463 10s, as compared with £62,368 last year. Racing throughout the day was of the most interesting nature, the fields, with the one exception, being good, and the majority of the finishes desperate, with the issue in doubt right up to the judge’s box. M. Gray, the young Stratford apprentice, had a successful day out, and secured the “hat trick” by riding three successive winners in Empire Camp, Pouma and Yoma. All three are Stratford-trained horses. Two enquiries of a minor nature were held, but in both instances no action was taken. The first was in connection with the running in the second, race, when J . F. Dombroski complained against Anderson for jostling, and the second was in connection with the alleged crossing of Sling Camp by Silent Knight at the last fence in the hurdle race. . All arrangements in connection with the meeting were capably attended to, thereby reflecting cued it "upon the officials. Details of the racing are as follow: CARDIFF MAIDEN HANDICAP, of 150 sovs; second horse 30 sovs and third horse 15 sovs. Six furlongs. 3Mr S. Spence’s b.g. Nothing but Close Fire was wanted by the public, the second favourite, Lightwood, carrying a good deal, less than half the money entrusted to Close Fire. 'Taitaiata was first out from Enthuse and Lupus, but as the field turned for home Eurella ran place, with Lightwood fourth. Entering the straight the order was Taitaiata, Enthuse, Lightwood and Eurella. NOTES AND:COMMENTS. (Bv Telegraph.—Special to Star.) MARTON, Jan. 2. The Marton meeting was concluded in ideal holiday weather. The track was much improved and the racing interesting. W. Bell, rider of Rangimoana in the Junction Plate, was suspended for three months for crossing. He has appealed. - , .Mountain Jean, a good favourite for the Junction Plate, was lucky' to win in a thrilling finish. She got away badly, so the fortunate run on the rails which won her the race equalised the early misfortune.. Luai'ne and Rangimoana led into - the straight, where Awa and Vuelta joined in, followed by Olympic. The favourite came through on the rails to beat Luarne by a head, with Rangimoana. half a length away third. Awa, Olympic and Vuelta were all close up. Bonnie Rill was allowed to pay a false price in the Second Hurdles, and led nearly all the way and won nicely from Mangawhero and Bonifant. Demand, Night, and Equitable finished next. The last-named, who was a hot favourite, gave a miserable display, and evidently it was not his day. Bonifant was again handled badly. Potoanui, ridden by J. R. Kami, won' the Electric Hack Handicap easily. Hall Mark, Panim. Fillette, and Matin Bell were in front in the early part, but Potoanui. who was fourth favourite, rail to the front in the straight and won by three lengths from the favourite (Fillette), with Matin Bell close up third, and Highway, Hall Mark, and Peter Rosa next.

Cleasanta, a good favourite for the Aldworth Stakes, waited on the field until the straight was reached, and then strode away to win by a length from Santonio. Correspondent, who was third, seemed to lie hampered a little in the straight. Helen Rufus, Para, and L’Amour were all dangerous at seven furlongs, lint- then petered out. Glenidle, with Mr. J. Morris up, proved much superior to the opposition in the Ladies’ Bracelet. Brigadier Bill, ridden by Mr. C.. L. Bull, was anchored by his 13 stone and less experienced rider. He was favourite, and Glenidle second choice, the pair carrying two-thirds of the total investments. . ■Master Sandstone had no difficulty in beating n better supported candidate in Startle in the Telegraph Handicap. Startle was a hot favourite. Master Sandstone jumped out first and was on the bit all the way, while Startle was kicked out to get within two lengths of him. Snatcher was finishinn- well in third place. J. Morris's stable provided the first, and second in the Farewell Hack Handicap, Ruby Ring, an odds-on

favourite, being easily beaten by Lucrative, who was at a liberal price. Megalo finished well in third place, just ahead of Highfiown, Black Rock and Modern. *

Martulla, was a good favourite in a one dividend field for the concluding event, Master O’Rorke being a decided second choice. The latter went away in the lead from Mangawhero and Martulla. The last-named was sent along, racing to the turn and soon headed Master O’Rorke, who faiL ed to respond at alf. Martulla went on to win decisively by a length from Avonlea, who was a length and a quarter in front of Master O’Rorke. Helen Rufus and Mangawhero were next. Helen R.ufus and Fillette were bracketed. The winner scored very comfortably. and Avonlea finished well after receiving none the best of the start.

Diomedes, who- would probably beat anj of the others up to five furlong®, is not entered for the classics. . Hop could lie have been, when his origina owner bought him at the Dublin sales for something like 40 guineas! Bott Picaroon and Zionist have shaped like stayers in all their ra-ces, and t-hej are regarded as having the besf classic pretensions,, but the 70-year-old owner of Priory Park, whose onlj appearance was at Goodwood, where lie won in a canter from just a useful field, is confident that he will beat all the cracks. We shall see.. t A singlehorse proprietor in Ben.-Irish yon the Derby with Papyrus, and Charlie Howard, butcher, -believes that similai good fortune will come to him through Priory Park. Meanwhile the Aga Khan leaves behind „him iu t-liis country a powerful . stable nuclei “Dick” Dawson at Wlntcombe, and a stud that is likely to become the finest- in these isles under Captain Greel at The Ourragh, Ireland. ,; .It is reallj wonderful- that the Ago Ivhnii should bo at the head of the list of winning owners. Three years ago lie had but a few two-year-olds running for him here. His success lias been phenomenal—unprecedented—rbut his triumphs, I have no doubt, in the Years to come will.be still greater. He is not only a visionary in. the, sense- that he is looking far ahead, but he.- is practical above all things, and .realises that only the -.best, manged-- by the best, and raced on the best lines, car achieve the best-.
