COST OF LAST ELECTION
CANDIDATES’ EXPENSES NEARLY £1, 000,000. A Home Office return which has been issued giving the expenses o.f the 1446 candidates in Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the last election states that, apart from returning officers’ charges, the election cost £982,340. As the vote polled numbered 14,523,398, each vote may he said to have cost rather over Is 4d. The largest sum spent by any candidate was £1492, by Sir G. C. Hamilton, who stood unsuccessfully in the Unionist interest for the Altringham Division. In the Isle of Wight, Briga-dier-General Seely’s expenses were £1467, and those of his Unionist opponent were £I4BB. Lady Terrington, who won the Wycombe Division, spent £1425, and the Conservative candidate there spent £1474. In London, the largest expenditure was £1072 by Mr W. H. Cowan, who was returned for North Islington. Mr Whitley, the Speaker, who was unopposed, spent £6, and Sir Hartshorn (also unopposed) £9. Mr MacDonald’s expenses were £1052; those of Mr Baldwin, £844; Mr Asquith’s, £743; and Mr Lloyd George’s, £507.
