SURROUNDED BY POLICE.
JEWELL THIEVES DISTURBED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Dec, 30. While three burglars were looting a Brixton jeweller’s shop a hundred police surrounded the block. The burglars, becoming alarmed, dropped their booty and dashed for the roof, keeping their pursuers at bay for two hours during the height of the gale, hurling tiles and coping stones at the police. Flashlamps illuminated every stackpipe and fire escape hv which escape would have heen possible. The burglars finally broke the cordon by jumping at great risk a narrow lane and descending two hundred yards away from the jeweller’s shop. One escaped through the mews, where a watchdog attacked the pursuing policeman. The second floored liis pursuer after a two-mile chase by throwing at him a raincoat, the pockets of which were crammed with gold watches and jewellery. None of the burglars were captured.
