PALMERSTON N.,"' Pec. 27. j , Heavy rain set in after the first' race j : and in consequence the track at Aw aj puni on Saturday was cut up badly. . The fields were smaller than on the: opening day, but the racing was .interesting. Tlie Tank and Star Ranger fought out the finish of the Kelvin Handicap. The Tank - just Scoring by a narrow: j Margin’.fifty yard's from the post. Star; Ranger appeared a sure winner, lnit The Tank finished too Strongly, return-' iiig a dividend bordering on double figures. Bonnie", Gold, after loading: into the straight, finished third just in; front of Gluement, Sottano, a sound : favo.urite, was beaten into fifth place 'after receiving every chance. Brigadier Bill nnii Royal Gift, who carried the bulk of the investments in the High -weight Handicap,' could only finish second'.and fourth' respectively. Bonena led all the way and won easily Paying "a double figure dividend. It was'a.' poor race. L . Lipsoi, starting at a, remarkably go.od price, R?d all .the way in the Higlidm defeating Miss HupanA by a pari'ow margin, Highflown aud Hall Mark, wliq were almost in line with Miss; Hupana, were second and first Hall Mark fan fairly Well, but did not appear to relish'the going. Solferange (fifth) again failed badly, being a well-backed second favourite. ‘ .Cleasahta and Bumptious were both left at the . start of the president’s' Handicap, .Cl’easanta being rushed up in the first two furlongs and then being done a_ furlong from home. Ayola, always in a handy position, raced .away in the straight, and although Te Kuri, strongly ridden by Roy Reed, made "a great effort, he failed by three-quarters of a length. Merry Singer, suited by the going, ran an improved race into third place. Para found the distance beyond her.Tamatet.e had tp be pi eked out to beat Gaillard by .half’a length in the Palmerston Stakes. Gaillard had headed the favourite a fuflong from home, but Tnmatete came again, Suggestion was half a length away third, always being third. Anthonie was left and raced .up to his field at three furlongs, but then faded away again. Hyama, at a good two-figure price, won the Terrace Welter in good stvle. He . Was handy at the turn' behind Panim, and at the distance came away. He had to be kept going to stall off Potoanui and Kenyon, but' all three j placed horses finished well. Panim was not handled with the best of judgment, but was a good fourth, and the favourite Merchant fifth. Merchant was again very disappointing. Moutoa Lady fell at. the end of two' furlongs, R. J. Mackie, her.ridpr, receiving slight injuries. Aeriform, an outsider, finished too well for Gaze in the Himitangi Handicap, Gaze being about- an even money, favourite. Gaze was always well placed and had every chance. Helen Rufus finished on well in third place, and Martulla, after receiving anything but an easy passage, was a good fourth. Happy Days, badly ridden, was fifth, and Kilfaire, who finished sixth, will be improved by tiie race. Mireusonta, beginning smartly, led all .the. way in .the Awapurii Handicap. 1 Last Crust challenged in the straight, but could not get to the winner bv r half a length. Imperial Spark ran on well into third place, just ahead of ’ Koodoo and Master O’Rourke. The winner was at a good price.
