ATHLETICS.
NEW ZEALAND TOUR. PROBABLE EARLY NEXT YEAR. . It rijjpehrs -tp be highly probable that the New Zealand A.A.A'. will invite ari Australian teairi to tpiif the Doiniiiion"’. dnfing neXt February with pArtiblpation iii the New Zealand track and field" championships at. Auckland as part of Tbe Gourieil of the New Zealand A.A.A. will come to a ‘ finding Ori the Subject at the next meeting- —•" Ari loth iriSt. Of coufsri an invitation wdl be rin the understanding that champions are included, and they must be chairipiOns to have A chance agairist the Ddiriiniori clacks iri scratch cpitipetition. The 1 executive officers of the Union -will be asked, if the tour eventuates, to make a selection, of about five from a bunch Of, probably, ten who will be named by the v New Zealand authorities. Those Who riiay He nariied include: L. C. Parker ; or Norman Grehan (Queenslarid),. L. R. M. ROss of W. Whyte (TictOria), G. It. fiyde (Vio tona), and A. W. Winter, V. R. Harbjsori, J. xHattdri, arid W. H. Huttori N.S.W.
And, of course, there are others, such for Pxfimple, as A. Leitch (Tari.), Geo. R. Parker (N,S;W.), E. N. . Ho'ward (S.A.J, H. S. Grfandeinarige (N.S.tF.), T. W. McNamara (N.5.W..), and Q. A. Bronder (Vic.). A point mentioned is that if a team °r, five champions could be got together it would lie aii additional attraction if four of them could be made up i“to, & relay combination—either straight or medley.: The tour would be oil the same lines as those by the South African and American teams.
ATHLETCIS FOR WOMEN. The Council .of the New Zealand A.A. A has had before, it the question qs to the advisability of including v events for women in the programme of the track and field championships of.. the Dominion. I notice that the opinion of the British Medical Association has been sought as to whether or riot competition in athletics was harmful to women. The reply received was: “Whilst favoring-ail reasonable Athletic, exercises for iVoifleri, we are of Opinion that competition by therii iri track events iri harmful.” It was even- . nfilly? deicided to refer: the hiedical opinion to the Centres, arid to ask whether they favoured putting events for woriieri on the championship programme, and, if so, whether they should count for the shield. It is understood that there are women’s clubs in various parts of New Zealand, arid, to my way of thinking, these clubs should have an Association of their and conduct their own championships in the same way as the girl swim- ■ mers do—of course, provided it is decided to go contrary to medical opinion.
