NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Telegraph—Special to Star.)
PALMERSTON N., Dec. 26, The day was brilliantly fine for the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting, the going beipg on the soft side after the heavy rain in the early morning. There was a large attendance and some very fair racing. There is little to he said about the opening event, for Puwhero waited on Manga whero for six furlongs/ and then strode to the front and won easily from Bonifant. The rider or Demagogue, lvho was fourth, lost an iron, - /and Kerokefo’s girth was broken and hanging down when he returned to the scales. Puwhero was a little more than an even money favourite. Euphonium and The Tank were first aiid second in the Trial Plate, and were first and third favourites. They raced in the lead practically 'all the way, Euphonium winning by a head. Mountain Jean, finishing on, was two lengths away third, and Sanctuary, Idanoe and Kelburn next. Kelburn on appearance looks good. Highwa'v carried top weight and won the Tararua Welter decisively, returning a good double figure dividend. Peter Rosa, who. was in or near the front all. the Way, was lucky to gain second money, for Sottano, who went a really good race, appeared to beat him by at least a head. Matin Bell, handled in a peculiar manner for such a hot favourite, was only able to finish fourth. She will do better. Highway won well, but Sottano was unlucky. The • Sunart and Clandhu bracket was backed down to less, than even money in the Manawatu Cup, with Avola a good second choice. Clandhu led practically all Che' way, although he had little in reserve from Te Kuri at the finish. Pantler, after tailing off in the early and middle stages, camp very fast, and at the finish whs in fourth‘place, Avoia, who finished fifth, had every chance, and was fairly beaten. Merry Singer, Black Ronald and Bumptious were not in the.firing line at all over the last three furlongs. Licinius at odds on and Gold Box cleared away from the field in the Nnrsery Handicap, Licinius ‘ winning by half a length, Merle, Phantasy and Standard, who finished almost in line four lengths behind Gold Box, should all he improved by the race. Kaiti and Vawai’d showed pace for three furlongs, and then petered out. Lipsol won the Gillies Hack Handicap very easily from Highflower and Solferange) returning a useful dividend' Ihe three place-fillers wei-e in front practically all the way. Bonnie y Gold finished fast in fourth place, • and Panim and Miss Hupana were next. Merchant, the favourite, was slow away from the barrier, and did not improve, and Jubilance was lost on the journey, but she will improve. Suggestion’s class was too much for the opposition in the Fitzherbert Handicap, and be won pulling up. Dangle went with Master Sandstone for, five furlongs, and then both were beaten, but Master Sandstone- stayed on the better into fourth place. Last Crust finished .on well into second berth, and Master O’Rorke came from an almost impossible position into third place. Cleasanta won the Grandstand Handicap after receiving an interrupted passage to the turn and then getting a lucky run on the rails. Martulla, who had the winner doing her best over the last hit, returned a dividend bordering on double figures. Gaze ran a fjfir race into third place, and Royal Gift was a fair fourth after being-out making the pace with Aeriform nearly all the way. Ivilceit, who finished fifth, should be an early winner.
