■ NELSON, Dec. 27. At chess the first round in seition play has been concluded. In : section A i E. A. Hicks beat Fairburn easily. Bullock beat Anderson afid won his first game in championship play. Purely beat Dodds, who threw away winning chances by moving hurriedly. The Moir v. Stenhouse game is still in progress and should be'.won’by Moir. Section B.—Kelling beat E. Hicks. The winner launched a strong attack, forcing his opponent to resign. Vaughan beat Severne after a stubborn fight. Cole v. Gyles ended in a draw. Peihl drew’ a bye.
