It is generally believed on the waterfront that tliere will be no conceited action on the part' of shipowners unless their hands are forced by extreme union action. Members of maritime unions are disconcerted by the move of the inter-State shipping companies paying off crews of eight vessels at Melbourne and'Geelong. The shipowners state that the laying up of these vessels, whicL are colliers, has no- connection with the shipping trouble. They would have been taken out of commission in any case this season. *
The overseas steamer Arabian is held up at Fremantle, her Chinese crew numbering 42, having deserted. Tliey -hack asked for improved conditions. ,
