The funeral of the late Mr John Dickson, which took place- on Tuesday afternoon, was very largely attended by numerous old residents of South Taranaki, bv whom the deceased gentlemau was held in the highest esteem. The funeral service at the house and graveside was conducted by the Rev. R. E. Evans. The cortege was a lengthy one, the pall bearers] being Messrs J. Coiiaglen (sen.), W. Conaglen (jnii.), E. S. Forsyth, of Pihama, D. Hyndman, Stratford, C. Trotter, Opunake, and C. Hooper, Hawera.. (The sorrowing widow and family were the recipients of many beautiful floral emblems and several telegrams, and have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their sad bereavement.
A spectacular, though dangerous occurrence lor the persons involved, was witnessed on the Skeet Road at a spot near “Byrne’s Creek’’ on, Tuesday, when one of the early models of the übiquitous “Lizzie” got out of control, presumably owing to a mishap to the steering gear. Though travelling at a. moderate pace the vehicle, had . snffideln-fc' momentum, to make the position of its two occupants very • precarious, as it commenced a dashing career of short rushes from side to side of the road. Finally the front wheels locked and the car .overturned: completely, leaving the rear wheels revolving wildly in the air. One of the occupants was thrown clear and escaped with a few abrasions. The driver, however, dung to the wheel and was' penned inside the inverted; body frame, which supnorted the weight of the car and afforded him protection. Mr. j. Kehely, of Kaponga,: who was driving in the. vicinity arrived on the scene a few moments later, and with the assistance of two; others raised the car sufficiently to allow the imprisoned ■driver .to, get free. .It was then found that apart from a few bruises he had sustained no injuries. When the car was righted considerable damage was apparent in the. body and frame, but it was able to proceed under its down Power. Both persons mnv he credited with an exceedingly fortunate escape, but the driver’s bmk would surelv warrant, his anticiyimnps'* should he take a chance ; ’ 1 a Eorti voffip o’* aneculate in certain oft-quoted tickets.
