Uninviting conditions prevailed for eafiy woiKers at Awapuni tms morning,, .is rne result of heavy rain throughout the night and early morning the tracks were somewhat heavy and the condiuon of the plough'• made work thereon impossible. Outside the track proper was used. Save in one or two isolated instances no fast; work was done, the visitors ' being restricted to half-pace trotting exercise. Pantier was dispatched over L] miles and moved somewhat sluggishly. Mega lo and Renmure ' did useful work, moving freely., Santonio and . Suggestion were sent over six furlongs. Bidwell’s sjirinter was on the move before Santonio got going and. although the latter made up a portion of the leeway by the time the straight was reached, the Wairarapa candidate, hard held, had the advantage at the finishing point.

iiirthmark was sent two rounds at a steady pace. •Sottano did a round-at half-pace. Yan Yean and Partner were sent a similar distance

Tlie two-year-old Troiibador was given easy exercise.

Hallowvonia covered two rounds hard held. The Aucklander Master ,o’Rorke. was sent over a distance at a fa.t pace, moving pleasingly. dvazone went a round, ihe last half at.a fair pace. Idanoe moved nicely, finishing down the straight strongly.

NOTES. AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas.) .Although still a maiden, General Pryde has run races in strong fields that would have won most of the “hack’ ’ events run in these parts. As he is reported to be well, General Pryde is-certain to be one of the wellbacked division in bis races at the Taranaki meeting. - ; y ’ .t Trainer R. Johnston lias Papaponga as well now as at any period of his career, and ' his s Woodville form was good. Papaponga is certain to be well supported at . the; Taranaki meeting, l and; form points to his being handy at the finish.

Degage has been working well at Trentham, and is expected to run well in her, Auckland engagements. Degage is a promising filly, ’and -• is certainly better than her public form suggests. When 'available, K. Reed will have the mount on • Degage. • • Since winning at the Feilding meeting Piquant has gone on the right way, and it wili surprise many should the imported, mare not pay- expenses on the Auckland trip. She ds ;engaged in a seven furlong race on Friday, but , should do better in six furlong races later in the meeting. ■ ; The Trehtham-trained Quiescent: has been accepted for in the Queen’s Plate and’ the' Robinson Handicap on • the .opening dafeat Elleisliei He is well placed in , the Robinson Handicap, and - the weight conditions of the Queen’s Plate are also favourable to. Quiescent, which is a much Vetter' gelding than some think, aud it will indeed be surprising if Quiescent does, not do wellat Ellerslie. ;

. Waibreka Jack and Puwhero both can gallop) fast and jump well, but neither are good stayers, aiid a twelvfi furlong race suits tfiisjpair. better than 1£ miles, and if he jumps well Little River should, make the; hurdle race at Awapuhi inteiesting for ; them, In Lady Cavendish and Star • Area the Taranaki province holds a strong hand in the Nursery Handicap at the Manawatu meeting. Star Area showed brilliancy at Woodville, and .won convincingly, but Lady Cavendish may be too /“classy” for Star Area, although the 161 b should bring,..-them together. Shut, Eye has shown such brilliancy in his races that bankers will have to accept a small dividend off him ,in the Borough Juvenile at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting. Shut Eye will be ridden by 'J. Dombroski, who is still on the improve and rides his share of winners. <

At the Feilding meeting Miss Mickey, Equitable and Waimatoa fought out "a good battle. in the hurdle race on the second day /of the meeting, and their meeting to-morrow should result in a capital race. . With a rider of W. Bo,wden’s class Miss Mickey may reverse positions with Equitable, but with a less capable pilot she will have ' the hardest part to do, as she appears to be hard to ride. -

Judging by the excellent acceptances received for the Christmas meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club, the metropolitan club should have not only an enjoyable but a profitable meeting as well. .

As a two. and three-year-old Tarleton was subject to mpre than his share of ills that are peculiar to horses, hence his constitution is somewhat impaired, and the finishing off of Nassau’s son for a long distance race must /be a difficult matter. This may account for his absence from the Auckland Cup field.

Although Mr R. McKenzie has both Suriart and Clandhu engaged in, the Manavvatu Cup, to be run on Friday next, those who should know say that the latter will be the “elect” of the stable for this event. Up till now Clandhu has not showm in public that he is capable of winning such an important handicap, but last season his form was promising, and he is bred - on lines that should stand to him in distance racing. It will interest sportsmen in these parts to 6ee how Avola runs the Pinnies of the Manawatu Cup on Friday: She won well over shorter distances at Feilding, and in those events was finishing on well, but the fact must not be overlooked that the Feilding course is a difficult one for some horses, but Avola is an exception, and, getting around the turns well, had an uninterrupted run. Had Merry Singer a similar run he may have beaten Avola at Feilding, and may do so in the Manawatu Cup. Since winning at Woodville, Royal Divorce has been given work over 10 furlong courses, which would suggest that the Auckland Cup is his mission, jbut it will occasion surprise should jQuinlivan run such a promising horse ■ over a two-mile journey /on what looks | like a “Summer Cup” preparation. Possibly the English-bred one will make j his presence felt in .the rich Racing • Club Handicap or the Summer Cup. i Since going north the Taranakiowned Stork has registered several good

gallops, 'and as he is better seasoned than meet of the acceptors for,; the Auckland Cup it may enable Stork to run a fair race, but on paper the field looks too good to allow the son of Hallowmas to win such a good prize as the Auckland Cup. * The. imported horse Merit was not accepted for on the opening day of the Auckland meeting, but has several erigagemeuts on later days, and these in short distance events, which will favour the black mare. Since coming to the Dominion Merit has not been favoured with the best of luck, but as she has pace her turn cannot he far off. A perusal of the horses engaged in the Queen’s Plate to be decided at Ellerslie on Friday shows that an exceptionally good class are engaged, and in putting this race on the summer programme the Auckland Racing Club have provided a want for the owners of promising young horses they they may not cax-e to risk running in the large fields that usually face the barrier at Ellerslie.
