“WELCOME TO HAWERA.”

SCHEME TO i>iRECT TRAFFIC. TOURiSTS TASS TilßbUfeH THE TOWN. iNSTEAH OF. THROUGH OUTSKIRTS. Signs. calculated .to induce, tourist and,, motor traffic generally to pass: through <the town of Hawera instead of through the outskirts, as is at present often done, were erected this afternoon. . , , . , .. . . .- ■ A scheme, of w'hich the erection of the. signs is. the ; chief feature,, was brought forward by Mr F. W. Horner at a recent meeting of, .the,, Hawefa Chamber of; Commerce, Mr Horner instancing cases where, people travelling by car had gone through Hawera and had not seen the town. Signs indicating;, the route to take could be placed on convenient posts at the main intersections, . find motor traffic could thus be directed through, the town. Mr Horner; pointed out that motorists would, then pass King Edward Park, where they could picnic, of, if they did riot intend to stop .at all, would proceed over the route Which it was in the interests of Hawera that they should take. Accordingly .a committee, consisting of Messrs Bond,. Dixon and Horner, were appointed to arrange the route arid to bring, the matter before the Borough Council. The. Automobile • Association were consulted, arid then a delegation consisting of .Messrs ,T. Taylor, W. O’Caiiaghan, W. G. Walkley, E. Dixon and F. W., Horner waited on the council and obtained the necessary authority arid assistance. Frorii Wanganui of Eltham the route through Hawera was agreed on. as South road, via Princes and High streets arid Waihi road. From Opunake the route decided on was South road, via Dixon Avenue’, High and Princes streets, and back on to the South road. In addition the scheme included the erection of notices “Welcome to. Hawera” at suitable points, as well as the clearing of ground for parking cars beside the main entrance to the park, and the installation of - a penny-in-the-slot gas ring in the park for the convenience, of picnickers. The whole programme has been approved by the corporation, arid in a short time' it will probably be conn pleted in detail.
