ELECTRIC TRAINS.
EFFICIENCY IN BAVARIA.
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Dec. 22. . The Berlin correspondent of the Daily . Telegraph states that the Walehensee. works, .described as the biggest power station iri Europe, have been, completed. They derive their energy: by tapping the Walcliensee - Lake .through a tunnel into the Kochellsee, which thus yields 1,070,000 horsepower. , Part of the scheme is supplying Bavaria with so-called white coal; totalling 1,000,000 liorse-power. , The yield may eventually render Bavaria independent of coal, which it does not possess in its own territory. /
The distribution scheme / carries energy to' Nuremberg and tlie industrial towns in central and northern Bavaria. A • considerable portion of . the; railways will in 1925 be worked by current from :the Bavarian Alps, the power costing one-third of equal' power frbin coal.; This is likely; to .give, Bavaria an advantage over its' conimeycial competitors in northern and western Germany, rind may . dr aw' population to Bavaria. There is a political aspect of the scheme, as the Socialist' trade unions iri. Prussia,; .have,; always counted upon establishing a coal blockade' if / a Ludendorff dictatorship is established in Bavaria, which is likely to■ be still -less amenable To' political discipline in this respect. The completion of the Walchensee Works does .not augur well for the. tranquillity of Germany. .
