GENERAL “BIRDIE.”
NEW- GOVERNOR-GENERAL. MAY SUCCEED FORSTER, LONDON, Dec. 7. General Sir William Birdwood, who commanded the A.I.F. during the war. is returning to London from India”, says the Daily Mail. It is uncertain whether he will succeed General Rawlinson as Commander-in-Chief in India. He has vacated the office of the G.O.C. Northern Command. It is considered more likely that he will be appointed to succeed Lord Forster, Governor-General of Australia, to which country he is warmly attached. This would be a popular appointment, adds the newspaper. He regards every Digger as a personal friend, and was the only Imperial officer to understand the Australian temperament.
