ENGLISH DEER.
HERDS GO BACK 4M YEARS. There are lies ds of deer in Hreafc Britain going liable weii over iOO years, aiid many have had little or no hew blood introduced since their inception. In the 1924 register ot the Deer Herd Book Society of Great Britain, just issued, a list is given of the agfes of herds. It shows that — Mr George Brudeiiell’s herd lit Deene Park, Peter borough, has existed probably 400 years. Lord Clifford of Cliudleigh’s herd of 300 at Ugbrooke Park has had no new blood introduced since the formation, about 1072. Lord Cobhanrs herd at Hagley Park, Worcester, was certainly extant -in 1785, and possibly much earlier. Lord Dai nicy’s herd at Cobhain Park, Kent, is of "ancient formation.” Sir Robert Harvey, of Langley Pit He, has a verv mixed herd, the fallow of which have been bred at Langley since is was a royal nark where Queen Elizabeth bunted. It includes 27 Swamp, 49 White-Red, 20 Japanese, 6 Indian Hog and 15 Wapiti. Of Lord Hastings’s mixed herd at Melton Constable Park, Norfolk, the Red, numbering 150, are of 13th centurv formation.
Captain Knaiehbull has a herd of 150 at Mershain Hatch, Ashford, Kent, wjiicli was enclosed by Royal Charter in 1018. Sir Richard Leighton’s herd of 100 at Loton Park, Shrewluiry. is probably well over 230 years old, while the herd of Mr. B. C. Pearson at Parham, Pulborotigh. numbering 200. is wild deer of the district.
Sir John Shelley’s herd at Shohrook° Park, Crediton. was probably formed 250 years ago, and Lieut.-Colonel Winch's at Boughton Monchelsen, Maidstone, 30() years ago.
