PARTNER STATES

PREFERENCE ISSUE. IMMENSE POSSIBILITIES. BENEFIT TO DOMINIONS. The Baldwin Cabinet fell last year when the Premier decided to go to the country on the question of tariffs. It would appear now that the pendulum of British opinion has swung round that the Dominions will benefit considerably as a result of the new proposals, which will give preference to the Dominions. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT (Received Dec. 20, 11.45 a.m.) CAPETOWN, Dec. 19. The South African party press expresses the greatest satisfaction at Mr Baldwin’s statement in regard to preferences.

The Cane Argus says that the Premier skilfully managed to redeem all but the mere letter of what was superficially considered might appear to be two irreconcilable pledges, namely, no new taxs on food and the fulfilment of proposals of the Economic Conference. The Cape "Times believes that the line of Imperial self-help, as outlined by Mr Baldwin, if it can be followed far enough, will reveal immense and quite unexpected possibilities for good for all the partner States of the Empire.
