CHEAPER FOOD.

FOR BRITISH PEOPLE. AND BETTER PRICES. FOR dominion" PRODUCERS. BY CABLE—PEESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Dec. 19, 1.5 p.m.) ' ' l LONDON, Dec. 18. The Sun special correspondent learne that huge scientific stores on the banks of the Thames, equipped with the latest machinery and defrosting deand erected and financed by the British Government, is the kingpin of Mr Baldwin’s secret scheme of spending. to aid the Dominions’ food exporters, who will be given preferential treatment regarding accommodation'therein. Well-informed people estimate that the Governmental cold stores will- be handling Dominions’ meat and fruit within a year. The newspapers who were blaming Mr Baldwin for vagueness when announcing: his £10,000,000 scheme in the House of Commons say that it is now clear that Mr Baldwin was faced with the enunciation of a proposition savouring, strongly of Socialism. The Government’s assistance to the Dominions will not end with cold stores, and there will propably be established a board consisting of representatives of producers and consumers to act in the - closest touch with the Imperial Economic Committee, co-operating wit hexporters to secure uniformity .of grading, standardisation qualities, co-ordinate transport facilities on land and sea, investigate the possibilities of the develooment of existing and; new sources of food supply wtihin the Empire, examine possible methods of applying preferential treatment to the Empire’s supplies, particularly in regard to marketing, finance and transport. The Imperial Economic Committee .will act as a sort °f vigilance association, drawing the attention !of the . Government to any instances in which even a humble pound is. spent on foreign food which might be produced in the Empire. It is learned .that the will not embark on anv retailing enterpTices /nor interfere with shipping, but will . . leave the gate open to the Australian Government by the utilisation of its own ships at a cheaper rate, and thus give Australian oroducers additional preference.—Sydney Sun cable.
