“SPONSOR’S FARCE.”

THE BAPTISMAL SERVICE. QUESTION OF REVISION. LONDON, Nov. 25. The House of Clergy of tlie Church of England has discussed a proposed revision of th© baptismal service. One speaker described the attitude of the sponsors as a farce, declaring that they regarded their only obligation to be the presentation of a perfectly useless mug. The question of revision was deferred. The Dean of Bristol objected to the words in the Creed, as used in occasional services, “the resurrection of the flesh,” which, lie said, were impossible to justify. The amended words, “the the body and everlasting life after death, ” were adopted.

An interesting comment on immigrants wa s made by Air. Justice Frazer during the hearing of an engineering dispute at a recent meeting of the Court of Arbitration in Greymouth (says the Star). His Honor considered that they were not “good all-round men.” “Immigrants are very skilled in their own line, no doubt,” his Honor observed, “but their scope is limited. They are specialists, and I don’t think any inspector or union official Would object to such persons working as under-rate operatives for a few months until they became used to the full work.” The New York Sun, in a special dispatch from Washington,' reports the accidental discovery there of a net work of underground tunnels supposed to have been used by German spies during the war. The tunnels, which constitute a veritable labyrinth, run underneath the fashionable section of the capital, and their discovery was made when a heavily-laden lorry collapsed through a part of the roadway. German newspapers of 1918 were found pasted on the walls, and ’it is deducted that the tunnels were used as meeting places and means of communication by German spies.
