THE PACiNG C()N FErKnCe. ,As a matter of general principle it sheins right- and proper to be against the Government-, blit it appears only a matter of ordinary justice to b’e appreciative of the good work and .the great organisation of, the Racing. Conference (says the Wellhig'to-h Post). Of _ late there have been many criticisms of that body from people not too well equipped to. speak authoritatively, eviticisjVis- which the conference can ipute safely ignore as carrying little or . no.-. Wight. They have so obviously been, inspired by individuals working for their own ends ,to undermine the poker of the conference, that all right-thinking per■soiis will cast them aside -as merely Futile. lii passing, one cannot help Comparing the Fork of the executive of the Racing Conference with that of the Trottiug Cbnference. The general public, it is certain, do not realise that the difference is so gheat between the efficiency of the two bodies, for the organisation of tne Racing Conference is one well-oiled piece of machinery. Since- the two . recent accidents through which A. J. McFlinh ahd. C. H. Rteed lost their hves, there have been furthier whisperings -against the RaCmg Ooiifeten'ce. ,In fairness it has to be admitted that if there' is any hlgme it should be on the politicians, not the governors of. the tiirf. The COiifetehce lias attempted to solve the pfdblem of the big fields,.hut tiutil the recent amendment of the Gammg Act it received little or no help trdni. the Government-. Last week the Conference issued a complete table showing the safety limit, as reward<• huinber Cf hoteesi, of Ml the ‘racecourses iii tlie Domihioh. The fespdusibility obviously is how on the Clubs themselves. It is father hafd to se‘e why the COhretehce shouid be blamed lor the delinquencies of clubs, lot quite a good deal of tlie recent cnticis.ih has hCCVi oh uiattors pureh domestic, and not national. .If th*< <le;sife the ihiphiveihent of racing control it seems but natural to give more power to the Conference so that it elm coinpletcly enforce discipline, and not weaken that body, as some would have happen. Unless there should ho any misunderstanding that it is. con side ml that the workings of the Racing ConICience ate perfet one must- add that several matters—the stipendiary -steward system lor one—merit very complete disagreement. .At- the' same time, one is sure that if the delegates of the various clubs were guided more at the annual conference bv the reports of those committee's winch really do all the work, it would be all for the improvement of racing. Only those in the closest touch With racing-control realise tlie value of the service Sir George Clifford, a s president of the conference, has rendered gratuitously for so manv years It would be a tragedy for the tiirf' if he was lost to its control: indeed, a successor nearly approaching his standard is not in sight.
racecourse risks, the RECENT ACCIDENTS. ; MATTER Fqr consideration. ‘ mi r Dec. 17. ■ , tliac three racecourse aoci- • dents happeiied in the space of a fortnight, two latal, and the third very seiicus, has led the Star to ■ comment ' \- n l l r7 Hsks run by these makers of i Aev. Zealand holidays and the neetl of 1 reducing these risks, to a minimum. The . paper says : “All three accidents happened m fiat races. Tlie first was - caused bV a Jior.se falling and brjng--1 '"8 down (wo others; the second by » a horse slipping and throwing its - ruler against the rails: and the third , bv what the stewards declared to be , careless riding by another jockey; thus. , perhaps, no conclusion can lie drawn 1 from them save tlie general one" that - courses should he made as safe as pos- . side, and fields reduced wherever it lj is ad\ isahle (legislation passed this , session gives the dubs power to divide , I fields), and the welfare ol the jeekevs 1 j alw a\ s kept in mind. 9 here mav lie no -1 connection whatever between the two , things, hut it is at least interesting . that before racing began at. Takapuna" -.on tlie day of the first of these acci,l dents the stipendiary steward called - Die jockeys together and advised theni -1 to be <; careful owing to. tlie circular - nature of the course. The racing authi - oriti'es are their own judges as to the • ; safety of courses from the point of view - of lay-out or weather, and while wo , make nc- charge against any particular • club, we think it is oiiestionable that such matters should be settled in this ■ way. Parliament lias recently, thanks l largely to the insistence of the Labour Party, improved tlie lot of the jockevs. and it might profitably go further, ‘in - the meantime these 'accidents should receive consideration • fj-om the Racing Conference.’’
TITO’S ACCIDENT
A telegram was received bv Mr Fryer this morning stating that. Tito, the jockey who was injured at the To Awamutu meeting on' .Saturday, is doing exceptionally well, and the doctors have every hope that he will recover.
