PERSONAL ITEMS.
The newly-appointed resident house surgeon at Hawera Public Hospital, Dr. Stoke, arrived in town last evening. The Prime Minister was not sufficiently. well to attend the State luncheon to the chieftains from Samoa at Wellington the other day. Mr. Massey is still making progress, however, and ha® suffered no ill effects from his experiences at the week-end, when he braved the southerly storm to take part in the ceremonies attendant on the reception of the GovernorGeneral. A pleasant surprise awaited Misses Clark and Picken, the teachers at St. Mary’s School, last evening. During supper the pupils presented them with tokens c.f the esteem and affection in which .they are held. Miss Clarke was the recipient of a neat manicure set, and Miss Picken a lady’s mirror. Miss Clarke returned thanks on behalf of her colleague and herself. Mir. J. H. Hall, late cable subeditor of the Press, who has been appointed editor of the Hawera Star, was met last night by members of the literary staff of the Press and was presented with a shaving outfit. In making the presentation the editor, Mr. M. C. Keane, congratulated Mr. Hall upon his promotion, and said that during that . gentleman’s twelve months’ service with the Press he had done good work and would, he felt sure, achieve great success in the ioumalistic profession.- Mr. A. M. Burns (assistant editor) expressed a similar view, and nar.ticularly paid a tribute to Mr. Hall for his loyal service in the sub-editor’s room. Mr. Hall, iii acknowledging the compliments paid him by editor and staff, expressed hi® regret at his severance with the Press.
