Dr. E. Marsden, assistant director of education, is visiting Taranaki. Mr Leslie D. Niccolls, at, present secretary of the Rotorua Dairy Co., has been appointed secretary and store manager of the Awatuna Dairy Co. There were 93 applications for the position.
Mr John Gilmour, of Fitzroy, has received advice of the death at Patumalioe, Auckland, on Sunday, at> tho age of 60 years, of his brother Harry, who lor many years was a well-known resident of New Plymouth, having been associated with his father, the late Mr John Gilmour, in his bookselling business.
The death occurred at Te Uku (Waikato) a few days ago of Mr William 1 arsons Cogswell, at the age of 96 years. Mr Cogswell came to New Zealand fronr England* in the sailing ship Cresswell in 1853 and landed in Taranaki. Later he sailed in a small vessel rP coas fj bis destination being Raglan. A severe storm caused the vessel to take shelter at Kawhia. Accompanied by his wife, Mr Cogswell made his way overland, and settled at ie Uku, being the first settler to take up land in that locality.
Mr. Walter Fennell, writing on October 31 to a friend in Hawera, states _ that he is making good . progress in bis study. “I can notice •the improvement myself,” lie says, “and people who have heard me siiig all tell me that there is a decided improvement, and 1 sing with greater ease.” Mr. Fennell writes that it was very exciting in England during the election, bift that “things in general are cooling down again now.” He had met Mr. ad Mrs. B. C. Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. Page, Miss Glenn and Mrs. Riddiford.
