NATIVES REVOLT
IN NORTH-WEST AFRICA. SENSATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS. .. SPANISH FORCES MENACED. That the unrest in Egypt, which culiminated in the murder of . the . Sirdar, has spread to the millions of natives in North Africa is undoubted, and sensational developments have occurred. As Britain, France and Spain have substantial interests in the regions affected the revolt of the natives has an added significance. Whether Bolshevik propaganda is responsible for the uprising is, of course, a matter of conjecture. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Dee. 16, 11.10 a.ni.) LONDON, Dee. 15. The Daily Express says that a sensational development of the unrest in North Africa has occurred. In Morocco the Spaniards, after seven years of strenuous fighting and a vast expenditure of lives and money, are retreating before the Riffs to a/line one end of which runs just south of Tetuan, now Anjera. The tribes inhabiting the country north of Tetuan are suddenly revolting. The Spanish forces are seriously menaced in front and the rear, and Tetuan is threatened, and it is stated that the situation in Tangiers niay become critical. An official of the Spanish Embassy stated that it is all part of a general movement due to propaganda from outside which began in Egypt, spread to Tunis, and has now affected ten thousand Anjera, Arabs. He adds that Spain is in danger of losing her last foothold in Morocco. Great Britain is affected because of the proximity to Gibraltar and her interests in Tangier. France is alarmed because of Algiers and interests in Tangier. BRITAIN AND FRANCE. IN CLOSE TOUCH. Received Dee. 16, 11.30 a.m. P4-RIS, Dec. 15. It is officially stated that the report that France has sent Spain a Note in regard to Morocco is incorrect, but that the French Charge d’ Affairs at Madrid has been instructed to obtain the Directory’s views of new situations created by the Spanish evacuation, and to inquire as to Spain’s intentions regarding the future, has been confirmed. ' London and Paris Cabinets are Jreeping in close . touch with events in Morocco. • SCHEME OF VILLAINY. MUTINY IN~THE SUDAN. (Received Dec. 16, 11.50 a.m.) CAIRO, Dec. 15. The assassination of the Sirdar and the mutiny in the Sudan are parts of a vaat scheme of villainy, of which the British have important new evidence. Both events were premature, thereby sparing Egypt worse horrors. It is hoped that ■ the inevitable • storm of the forthcoming election will be followed by a lull, in which an Anglo-Egyptian settlement will be hammered out. SPANISH directory: NOT TO RESIGN. (Received Dec. 16, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 15. . The -Times’ Madrid correspondent says that the Directory announce that they have no intention of resigning. For weeks past the press of all shades of opinion have been celebrating iii advance the return of Estella from Morocco as a moment for a chaiige of Government. Lists of the new Ministry have even been published. The Directory has now stepped in with the following rejoinder: “It is hereby declared that all press comment regarding the substitution of the Directory by a civilian Government is pure nonsense. The Directory is not even thinking of resigning; on the contrary, it has still much work to do, and. is buckling to its task with greater faith and enthusiasm, thus fulfilling its obvious duty.—Times.
