RESENT MINISTER’S POLICY,
GENERAL MANAGER RESIGNS
The, Star’s Wellington, reporter ascertained this morning that Mr McViliy has resigned the position of General Manager of Railways. Evidently a number of officers of the Department resent Mr Coates’ policy of fording the „pa;ce. The report is interesting in view; of a rumour current several months ago that the Hon. J. G. Coates would be asked to control the railways as General Manager. In any event an interesting situation is bound to arise. (By Telegraph—Special to the Star.) WELLINGTON,' Dee. 15. Inquiries in official quarters confirm the week-end report that Mr R. W. McVjlty-, General Manager of Railways, has forwarded liis resignation to Mr Coates. .No official information is available, probably owing to the fact that the resignation is surrounded by unusual circumstances, of which probably more will be heard later. There is ground for believing that experienced railway officers have not been prepared to take full responsibility as railway administrators for carrying out some of the Minister’s instructions, as they believe the policy'of forcing the pace is not consonant with the general interest of the Department. Mr MeYilly’s resignation is likely to raise some highly controversial questions. When interviewed he declined to discuss the matter.
