NELLIE BRAMLEY SEASON,
“IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE.”
Local theatregoers can look forward to a special comedy treat when the Nellie Bramley Company return to'Hawera on Wednesday, December 17, and will stage “It Pays to Advertise.” The play is a breezy American comedy, and it is bound to be heartily welcomed. Witty dialogue and unexpected situations, with charming touches of sentiment, are the essentials of the piece, and its success as a laugh-maker has never failed. A novel advertising scheme is the motif of the new production, and its operation is highly diverting to the spectator. Mr Carl Lawson comes with a reputation for holding the main comedy character, and Miss Nellie Bi’amley: has a sweet-
ly appealing part.that should "win her additional merit. Mr George. Bryant has the play ■well in hand, so that nothing will be lacking in the effectiveness of the performance. “It Pays to Advertise” is a great favourite with audiences, who lin'd it a happy and laughable entertainment, delightfully enacted. It is advisable to book seats early for this very popular comedy. “PAID IN FULL.” A STRONG, VIRILE DRAMA. “Paid in Full,” the powerful drama which will be played on Thursday, December 18, is a play which has b'een well thought -out and presented, and the story' tells of a beautiful, charming woman, married to Joe Br'ooks, a wretched specimen of humanity, ivho,. having abused a position of trust as an employee in the great Latin-American steamship line, tries to save himself by inducing his wife to compromise herself with the millionaire head of the company. The wife consents, because she feels that she cannot allow him to go to prison, pointing to her and her extravagant motives as the, cause of it i all. Happily, however, when she i reaches the shipping magnate’s offee to put the plot into effect, she finds there also “Jimsie” Smith, a faithful servant of the company, who has long loved her. A dramatic scene follows. The climax is marvellously well worked up. Critics unanimously acclaim that Miss Nellie Bramley gives a splendid study in the role of Emma Brooks, which gives full scope for her art. She simply is the fascinating little wife, and carries the part with charm and grace. Mr George Bryant as Captain Williams, the stern ' old sailor and Mr George Howlett take their parts splendidly.
