A London cable says Sir Hugh Fraser and Sir William Finlay, the well-known lawyers, have been appointed justices of the High Court. On Friday evening Mr and Mrs S. J. Gibson, of Hawera, returned from a tour of the Old Country, Their many friends will be pleased to know 4 they are both well and have en joyed a. great holiday.

Mr W. \. Y alentine. who for several years past has been on the staff of the Farmers’ Co-operative Company at Hamilton, has rejoined the staff of Newton King, Ltd., at New Plymouth, with which he was associated prior to going to Hamilton.

Our Manaia correspondent writes: The citizens of Manaia and district will regret to hear that Mrs. M. A. Burke, of Patea, mother of Messrs. E. and G. Burke, of Otakeho and Kaupokomri respectively, is lying very ill at Mr. EL Burke’s home. Her numerous friends will wish her a speedy recovery. The funeral of Mr Samuel Henry Greer, which took place on Saturday at Te Henui Cemetery, was attended by a large and representative gathering of mourners. Deceased was a veteran of the South African war and of the recent war, and organisations represented at the funeral were the Masonic fraternity, the Legion of Frontiersmen, the South African War Veterans’ Association and the Bov Scouts. Mr R. L. Cooper (conductor of the New Plymouth Choral Society) and Mrs Cooper (accompanist) were presented with a cheque during the course of a concert by the society at the Whiteley Hall on Saturday night. Opportunity was also taken to present Miss Douglas (accompanist) with a marble clock. The Mayor (Mr F. E. Wilson), who is patron of the society, referred in appreciative terms to the self-sacrificing manner in which Mr and Mrs Cooper and Miss Douglas had always carried out their duties, and referred to the high position the choir held owing to the untiring efforts of these three members. The recipients of the presentations suitablv replied. —News.
