POLICE RAID
CAREFULLY LAID PLANS. TWENTY-THREE MEN ARRESTED. CHARGED AT WELLINGTON.
Detectives in general and in , Wellington in particular have evidently received , instructions to curtail the gambling proclivities of a certain section of the community.. As a result no fewer than twentythree men were arrested in the windy city last night consequent on a police raid. ?
(by TELEGRAPH- —PRESS ASSOCIATION, WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. The police for some time have been keeping a watchful eye on certain premises in the vicinity of Clyde Quay, where gambling was suspected' of taking place. Plans vyere laid for a raid anff last night these were carried >to a successful issue. Shortly before ten o’clock a party of detectives assembled and after each had taken up his appointed station an entry was made info the premises, where, it is alleged, a number of men were discovered engaged in gambling. As a result twentythree men were arrested, and a considerable amount of money was impounded. The men, after being charged at the police station, were allowed out on bail. They will appear at the Magistrate’s Court this morning.
