BRITISH FOOD PRICES.

EVIDENCE AT INQUIRY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPY RIGHT • LONDON, Dec. 11. Sir Auckland Ceddes questioned Mr. R. J. Thompson, an officer of the Ministry of Agriculture, who is giving evidence at the food prices inquiry, in reference ,to the L’ovcnt Gardens “illegal practice” of paying farmers daily average prices instead of the actual realisation on each parcel of produce. Mr. . Thompson admitted that though the Linlithgow report condemned the system, the Ministry of Agriculture had not taken any action, holding that it was for farmers to do so. The commissioner (Mr. Rylands) suggested that the meat trust controlling both the cold stores and the wholesale and. retail distribution systems might- rig the market-, as they are hot required to make an official record of the quantities in storage. Mr. Thompson agreed that if such a return were required, it would be most valuable.
