SJLSON CUP. EEILDING v. HAWERA. EXCITING FINISH. The conclusion of the first match for the cup presented by -Mr. Silson, of Hawera, was marked by one of those surprises which make cricket the glorious game of chance, giving the opportunity for a team apparently in a hopeless position to put their backs to the Wffll 'and. pull a match out of the fire; and this is what happened yesterday, for Hawera, with a lead of 18 runs on the first innings and a total in the second of 74, and with their bowlers and fieldsmen doing very well, looked almost certain winners as Feilding’s first five wickets fell for very few runs. Then, however, Cochran and Mamson were associated in a partnership which took the score from 19 to 80, and, the total was reached with three wickets to spare. Ilawera’s fielding was again very good, with only a few exceptions, but their bowlers were tired and could not maintain the excellent length and accuracy which-marked their play in the first innings. Hawera strained every nerve to win, and the runs towards the end came slowly. Both teams are entitled to great credit, especially in the field. The picking up and returning to the wicket were a' treat to watch, and their keen ness was very marked The finish was just one of those which give such a zest to the game.
As the 'players came off the field hearty congratulations on an uphill' win were extended to the visitors by Mr. Cray, ITawera headmaster, and in a brief and happy speech he commended them on their plucky struggle, and thev would long hold the oui>.
