U.S. CONSUL-GENERAL.
MR GUNSAULUS RETIRING. Mr E, N. Gunsaulus, who has been Consul-General in New Zealand for the past twelve months, announces that- he will retire from the American Consular Corps in a few days, after completing twenty-five years in the American diplomatic service. He intends to spend some months touring throughout New Zealand before returning to the United States, about March next. Mr Gunsaulus will be succeeded as ConsulGeneral by Mr W. L. Laurie, late Consular representative at Athens, but itis not yet known when he will arrive in the Dominion.
Mr Gunsaulus is retiring under a new law which makes that course compulsory after twenty-five years’ service in the Consular corps. He commenced his career in the American diplomatic service in 1900, and has held appointments at Pernambuco, Cork, Toronto, Quebec, Johannesburg, Singapore and Halifax. He feels regret that he is about to leave, New Zealand, and speaks of the many acts of personal kindness that have b£en shown to him by Ministers of the Crown, officers of State Departments and public bodies, business men, .and the citizens generally. Both he and Mrs Gunsaulus, he stated to-day, felt an attachment for New Zealand, and he had formed a very high opinion of New Zealand and its institutions, and believed the country had an important destiny ahead of it. He had been particularly pleased at the growing spirit of friendliness between the people of New Zealand and his own countrymen. He would always take a lively personal interest in the progress of the Dominion— Wellington Post.
