TRAINS COLLIDE
MISHAP IN WELLINGTON.
NO ONE SERIOUSLY HURT. INQUIRY TO BE HELD (by TELEGRAPH —PRE3S ASSOCIATION. Narrow escapes, from death were experienced in Wellington this morning when a suburban passenger train collided with a goods train, which, it is stated, was on the wrong line. It is rarely that an accident of this character has occurred in the Dominion.
WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. A collision occurred between a crowded suburban train and a goods train engaged in shunting operations at the Davis Street crossing shortly before eight o’clock this morning. The impact was fairly severe, but apart from damage to the engine and several carriages the consequences were not serious. One carriage was derailed, and a few passengers received scratches, but no one was seriously hurt. The train was bringing workers to the city and large numbers were standing on the platforms. Had the brakes” not been promptly applied the collision may have resulted in serious loss of life. ■ It is stated that the shunting train was on the wrong line, and owino- to the swerve in the line the driver of the incoming passenger train was unable to avert the collision. An inquiry will he held.
