Exception has been taken by the Taranaki Education. Board to a photograph of the school teacher’s residence at Awakino which was published in the Weekly Press. Discussing the matter at yesterday’s meeting/ the chairman, Mi- S. G. Smith, M.P., said he had not seen .the picture, but from what he had been told it cast a reflection upon the board. Mr P. J. H. White ©aid his attention to the picture had been drawn by Awakino residents, who were exceedingly annoyed with the publication and the letterpress. He would like it understood that the picture gave rise to an entirely wrong construction. The Readier lived there as a matter of choice and convenience to herself, while the hoard had done everything possible to provide immediately a new residence. ‘ He considered the picture and the letterpress cast, a slur upon the board and the Minister of Education, and, he regretted that one of their teachers had permitted herself to be photographed alongside the building described as the teacher’s residence. In moving that the question of replying to the misrepresentation that had occurred be left in his and Mr White’s hands, the chairman said it was no wish of the hoard that the teacher should live there. The board had made great efforts to get the new residence, and because the grant was delayed so long into the winter that it was impossible to cart over the roads was not its fault. The new residence was now being erected, and it was grossly unfair to make the; people of New Zealand think that that was the kind of residence the board allowed its teachers to live in.
