FALL OF EARTH.

BLOCK IN MANAWAPOU GORGE. CARS THROUGH TO-DAY. The heavy downpour of rain has caused a fairly big slip in the Manawapou Gorge, about 300 cubic yards of material having fallen and blocked the' road. The place at which the slip occurred is about five chains on the Patea side of the Manawapou bridge, within the Patea County Council’s district. The County workmen are at Moumahaki, but a number of men, contractors for Mr Lockhart, are at work clearing the road. At 11.30 a.m. sufficient. had. been done to enable passengers by motor to get past, but it was estimated that it would be 12.30 p.m. before sufficient progress would be made to enable cars to get through. About twenty-five ears were held up. The Patea County Council’s men are expected to arrive on the scene later, where, a considerable amount of work will have to be done, owing to there being a fair amount of overhanging e.cbris to be removed. It is estimated that it will be about, two days before the work is completed.
