THE REAL TEST
HAS IT YET TO COME. SITUATION IN EGYPT. STATEMENT BY MR BALDWIN. [The Daily Mail thinks that the real test in Egypt is still to come, and urges strong actiogx l>y the Government. Meantime the new Premier (Zirwar) has held an important conference with the Governors of all the provinces and they have been clearly instructed in their duties.' It is hoped that : good results will follow, and that the Premier will be supported by the moderates against the extreme elements.] BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, (Received Dec. 10, 10.30 a.nu) LONDON, Dec. 9; • The Daily Mail " says that the real test in Egypt is Still to come, and asks whether the Government ’s search for Sir Lee Stack’s murderers was mere make-believe. / “We cannot expect gratitude from a forgetful people like the Egyptians, but we are determined to have their:respect, even if it means the disbandment of the Egyptian army and the restoration of martial law.” i The Times’ Cairo correspondent says that the governors of all the provinces attended a special conference of Ministers, when Z/rwar (Premier), who is .also Minister of the Interior, delivered an important address to them. He reminded then that they were supreme under thei Ministry of the Interior in their respective provinces, and they must admiiister without any outside interference. The Government looked to then to ensure that no political propaganda was carried out unlawfully.
These injuctrins obviously, refer to the state of afairs existing under the previous regime, when the administrative officials Here constantly interfered with by the Zaghlulist senators and deputies, whpkeemed to consider their Parliamentary position gave them authority over the official Government representatives, who were also subjected to other iutside interference. The new Government’s action should conduce to terninate a condition of things which had iecome intolerable to both responsible Officials and the people, and there is type that henceforward the provincial government, will follow its normal regular course, as it did prior to the Zajhlulists’ accession to power. —Sun Calle.
