DOMINION AWARD SOUGHT.
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 9. The demand of the ]\ew Zealand B edemted Typographical and Industrial Association of Workers'for a.-Do-nriniou award formed the subject of Conciliation Council proceedings this morning. The application of Southland County newspapers for exemption was referred to 'the Arbitration Court. The Union asked for the following rates of pay: Day new's operators £b 15s per w T eek; day jobbing operators £i 15s. For night operators 20 per cent, extra was asked, and for operators 4s per hour for day work and 5s for night w r ork. The employers offered for day operators in the four cities £5 5s per week and outside the cities £5 Is, and other rates in proportion; casuals 3s per hour in the daytime and 3s fid at night.
The Union assessors at the Conciliation Council said they were asking for an increase in wages because newspap 01 s and the printing trade generally were 111 a prosperous- ■•rendition lhe employees wished to share in that prosperity. _ me employers replied that lr the increases' were granted the cost of jobbing would .go up because the increases would be passed on.
