No chance at all would be the verdict of 99 people out of 100, and yet the hundredth chance fell to the fortune of a resident of the Geraldine district. This is the story, and it is true in every particular, and can be verified. The gentleman in question left home with £3O in his pocket for holiday expenses. He attended the races and took a £5 note from his breast pocket, -which also contained two £lO notes and another fiver. He changed the note at the tote and put a single on his fancy. He won, and went to the paying-out window to receive what he had won, and put this in another pocket, which was to act as his bank. Feeling in the other pocket he was dismayed to find the £25 gone. He reported the loss to the club’s secretary, and described the notes. He was later informed that the notes had been found by a lady, who had left her address. He lost no time in writing to the acldi’ess, and asked the lady if she would accept a £5 note as a token of his gratitude. By the next mail he received a letter from the lady’s husband, ; accompanied by a cheque for the full ' amount, with exchange added on, statI ing how pleased his wife was to have , been the means of restoring the money to its rightful owner.
