GERMANS VOTE FOR REPUBLIC. POLICY OF CONCILIATION. RESULT OF ELECTIONS' [The people of Germany' have decided not to return to-the mon--archieal system of government. In the election yesterday they emphatically gave their verdict in favour of a Republic. It would appear, therefore, that any hopes * that, the followers of the Hohenzollerns had of a return tot the throne of the ex-Kaiser or one of his sons have now heen completely shattered.] v . . . BY CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPY EIGHT. SOCIALIST GAINS. BY Cim.E—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT -Received Dec. 9. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. S. Provisional final -German election results give the state of the parties as follow: . Social .Democrats ............ 129 •, Nationalists 104 - Centrists 67 People’s Party ..... 50 Communists 44 Democrats 31 Bavarian People’s Party .... 19 Luclendorffists 14 v Economics 10 Farmers 4 Haiiovarians ... ........... 4 Others 8 Compared with the May elections, the Socialists have gained 29 seats and others 16. Communists and Ludendorffists both lost 18. Marx and Stresemann have been re-elected. PROGRESS RETURNS. With the election returns so far very incomplete, the German Democrats and Social Democrats appear to be gaining in Berlin at the expense of the Extreme .Nationalists and Cbm--munists. The Social Democrats are doing well at Hamburg, Munich and Mannheim, and the German Nationalists are also scoring at Munich, where the Communists and the- 3 German People’s Party are losing heavily. The latter, however, sire leading at Karlsruhe. .
Hie Ludendorffists are practically wiped out, and the Communists have lost heavily. Admiral Von 'Tirpitz has been re-elected. Apparently the Socialists will be tlie strongest party. The German elections take place on the 7th, including those for the occupied area. “
Although 25 parties have suomitted lists the contest will be mainly between groups supporting the republic and those supporting' the monarchy. The results are not; expected to produce sensational changes. The Monarchists, if: victorious, will proceed slowly and constitutionally;'and' probably put forward one of. the exKaiser’s popular sons, Prince Eitel or August, as candidate for the presi- '• dency when Herr Elbert’s ' term' expires shortly. This is the first step t-o the restoration, of . the monarchy. Received Dec. 9. 11.55 a.m. ■ . LONDON, Dec, 8“ Router’s Berlin -correspondent . says it is now clear that the. Republic has been victorious • over the forces in favour of a reaction towards monarchism, and the policy of the 1 new-Goverri-ment. will be conciliation, the fulfil- . ment' of the treaty; and. the Dawes obligations. The Social Democrats will be the strongest party in the-new Reichstag, • witha probable gai n of about-35 seats. .It- is possible.,the old so-called Wirth Coalition, composed of Social Democrats, German Democrats and the Catholic Centre t Party, with the support of . various minor parties, have a very small absolute , nmjoritover the Opposition, even if the latter includes the German People’s Party, led by Stresemann. , .A significant feature of the elections has j been the complete collapse of the Eudendorffists, who have gone over oractically en masse to the, German National Party,' which is. now the second strongest party in the House'. " The Communists also lost considerably, chiefly to the Social Democrats. They have about 45 seats, compared with ''62 in the old Reichstag. The Catholic Centre Party maintained their position. The German Democrats, German People’s Party and the Bavarian People’s Party gained several seats. There are now three alternatives for the formation of the new Government; firstly, a big coalition of the Social Democrats, the German People’s Party, and Centre Party Democrats: secondly, ar Wirth - Coalition; and thirdly, the continuance in office of the nresent Government Under Marx and"'Stresemann, ivlth the benevolent neutrality of the' Social Democrats. .
