STILL AN AMATEUR.

THE CLARINGBOLD CASE. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WANGANUI, Dee. 8. Txu-ee or four years ago the Wanganui centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association did its best to have Claringbold, of Ilawera, who was disqualified because he was a cash rider in motor , cycle races, reinstated as an amateur swimmer. The cquncil, howevre, was adamant, and the condition was laid down that if Claringbold wished to be reinstated lie would have to give up motor cycling for monev. Recently the question was reopened by the Taranaki centre, and. after being again discussed by the council it was decided that the International Federation should be consulted by cable. It is understood a cabled reply has now been received, intimating that the disqualification should be removed, and that motor cycle riding will not in the future be a barrier to amateur swimming. »

This, if correct, is very satisfactory news indeed, as it gives back to swimming one of the best performers this coast has seen. A few years ago Claringbold was the -speediest' sprinter along the coast, and he is credited with cutting out the 100 yards in 61 seconds. If Claringbold can get back to form, lie and Dowsett should make two fine representatives from this coast to the New Zealand champion-; ships to be lield at Christchurch in' February. Dowsett is swimming well, and if he keeps up to form his prospects for the 100 yards look very bright.
